Can a Locksmith Make a Key From the VIN?

Your VIN can be used to look up the factory key code so a locksmith can cut a matching blade, then program it to the car, even when no original key exists.

What the VIN can unlock

Your vehicle identification number is tied to factory records that can include the original key code, the cut that came from the manufacturer. With proper access and proof of ownership, a locksmith can use that code to cut a blade that matches your locks without ever seeing your old key.

This is especially useful for all-keys-lost, where there is no key to copy. The VIN gives us a starting point for the mechanical cut, which we then pair with electronic programming so the key also starts the car.

Where to find your VIN

The VIN is usually visible through the windshield on the driver's side dashboard, on a sticker in the driver's door jamb, and on your registration, title, and insurance card. It is a seventeen-character code on modern vehicles.

Having it ready when you call speeds things up. With the VIN and your year, make, and model, we can often confirm what key you need and whether we can cut it by code before we even arrive.

When VIN cutting is not enough on its own

On some vehicles the factory code is not available to the aftermarket, or the lock has been replaced and no longer matches the VIN. In those cases we decode the existing lock directly instead. Either way, we can usually still produce a working key.

Programming is always the second half. A correctly cut key still has to be learned by the immobilizer to start the engine, which we do on site for most makes and models in Palm Beach County.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need the physical car to make a key from the VIN?

We can often pre-cut a key by code using your VIN, but we still come to the car to program it so it starts. For all-keys-lost, the car must be present for the electronic side. Sharing the VIN ahead of time just speeds up the visit.

Is making a key from the VIN secure?

Yes, when done properly. We require proof of ownership before using your VIN to cut a key, because it grants access to your vehicle. This protects you against anyone trying to get a key to a car that is not theirs.

What if the VIN code does not match my locks?

Sometimes a lock has been replaced and no longer matches the factory code. In that case we decode the existing cylinder directly to get the correct cut. We can usually still make a working key either way.
