Why this happens
It is more common than you think, especially with push-to-start cars. The engine keeps running on the signal it already detected, but once you step out and the door locks with the fob still inside, the car will not let you back in without that fob. People do it while warming up the car, running into a store, or unloading.
A running engine adds a little urgency because of fuel use and, in our Florida heat, any pet or child left inside. Stay calm, keep an eye on the car, and do not try to smash a window unless someone inside is in real danger.
What to try first
Check every door and the trunk, since one may not have locked. If you have a spare fob at home or with a family member nearby, that is the quickest fix. Some automakers offer a phone app that can unlock the car remotely if you set it up beforehand, so it is worth checking your app.
If none of that works, call a mobile locksmith rather than forcing entry. We carry professional tools that open the door cleanly, and we can usually reach you fast anywhere in West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County.
If a child or pet is inside
Treat anyone trapped in a hot running or non-running car as an emergency. In Florida heat a closed car becomes dangerous within minutes, so call 911 right away if a child or pet is showing distress. Emergency responders can enter immediately when a life is at risk.
If there is no immediate danger, a locksmith opening the door without breaking glass is faster and cheaper than a window repair, and avoids showering the interior with shards. Tell us when you call that someone is inside so we prioritize the run.
