My Key Works in the Door but Not the Ignition

A key that opens the door but will not turn the ignition usually points to a worn ignition cylinder rather than the key itself. Here is what is happening.

Why the door works but the ignition does not

The door lock and the ignition cylinder are separate locks that the same key operates. They wear at different rates because the ignition is turned far more often and under more load. Over time the ignition cylinder can wear enough that the key no longer lines up its tumblers, even while the less-used door lock still accepts it fine.

This is actually a helpful clue. When the key opens the door but will not turn the ignition, the key is usually fine and the ignition cylinder is the worn part that needs attention.

A few things to check

First rule out a locked steering wheel by rocking the wheel gently while you apply light pressure to the key. Confirm the shifter is fully in park, since the interlock can block the cylinder. If those are not the issue and the door still works while the ignition will not turn, the cylinder is the likely cause.

Try a spare key in the ignition if you have one. If the spare also opens the door but will not turn the ignition, that further points to the cylinder rather than the key being the problem.

How a locksmith fixes it

A mobile locksmith can repair or replace a worn ignition cylinder on site and match it to your existing key when possible, so you do not end up carrying two different keys. If the cylinder is replaced, we can set it up to work with the same key that opens your doors.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my key open the door but not turn the ignition?

The ignition cylinder is used far more than the door lock, so it wears out first. When it is worn, the key can no longer line up its tumblers in the ignition even though the door still works. Usually the key is fine and the cylinder needs service.

Could it be the key instead of the ignition?

It can be, especially if the key is old and rounded. Try a spare key in the ignition. If the spare also opens the door but will not turn the ignition, the cylinder is the more likely cause rather than the key.

Can a locksmith match a new ignition to my current key?

Often, yes. We can repair or replace the ignition cylinder and, when possible, set it to work with the same key that opens your doors. We do this on site across West Palm Beach so you keep using one key.
