Why a key gets stuck
On most vehicles the key only releases when the car is fully in park and the ignition is rotated to the correct off position. If the shifter is not seated all the way in park, or the car thinks it is not, the cylinder will hold the key as a safety feature. This is the single most common reason a key will not come out.
Other causes include a worn ignition cylinder, debris or a bent key inside the lock, or a steering lock that is binding. Over years of use the small parts inside the cylinder wear down and stop releasing the key cleanly.
Safe things to try first
Make sure the transmission is firmly in park, and on some models try gently rocking the shifter while light pressure is on the key. Jiggle the steering wheel left and right to relieve any bind on the steering lock, since pressure there can hold the cylinder. Confirm the ignition is rotated all the way to the off position rather than accessory.
Do not yank hard or use pliers on the key. A snapped key inside the cylinder turns a simple problem into a bigger one. If gentle attempts do not free it, stop and call for help before the key breaks.
When to call a locksmith
If the key still will not release, the cylinder or the shifter interlock may be failing and needs hands-on attention. A mobile locksmith can free the key without damaging the lock, then repair or replace the cylinder if it is worn out.
