GM No Key Detected Problems Explained

A No Key Detected message on a GM vehicle has several common causes, from a weak fob battery to a worn ignition or a fob that needs reprogramming.

What No Key Detected means on a GM

On Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, and Buick vehicles, a No Key Detected message means the car cannot find or read an authorized key at the moment it checks. On push-to-start models the car looks for the fob in the cabin, and on models with a slot or sensor it expects the fob in the right place. When that check fails, the start is blocked.

It is a security message, not necessarily a sign of a broken car. The system is simply reporting that it did not get a trusted answer from a key. The job is to figure out why the answer is missing.

Common causes from simple to serious

The most common and cheapest cause is a weak or dead fob battery, which stops the proximity signal before the buttons quit. Holding the fob against the marked backup spot or replacing the coin battery often clears it right away. Interference from other fobs or devices stacked together can also confuse the read.

Beyond the battery, the fob itself can fail, the receiver or antenna can have a fault, or a worn ignition or start system can intermittently lose the signal. On some vehicles the fob simply needs reprogramming after a battery service or a repair. A pattern of intermittent failures usually points to a failing fob or a connection issue rather than a flat battery.

How a locksmith diagnoses and fixes it

We start with the cheapest, most likely cause and work up. We check and replace the fob battery, test whether the fob is transmitting, and confirm whether the vehicle is reading it at all. If the fob has failed, we supply and program a new one. If a key needs reprogramming after service, we handle that on site.

Because we are mobile in West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County, you do not have to tow a car that will not start to a dealer. We bring the keys, batteries, and programming tools to you. Call us with your year, make, and model and describe when the message appears so we arrive ready.

Frequently asked questions

What is the first thing to try when my GM says No Key Detected?

Try the fob battery first, since a weak battery is the most common cause. Many GM models also let you hold the fob against a marked backup spot to start. If that works, replace the coin battery, and if it does not, the fob or receiver may need attention.

Can a dead fob battery cause No Key Detected?

Yes, very often. Proximity sensing draws power and fails before the buttons do, so a weak battery commonly triggers the message. Replacing the coin battery is cheap and is the first step before assuming the fob has failed.

Does No Key Detected mean I need a new key?

Not always. It can be a battery, interference, a receiver fault, or a fob that needs reprogramming. We diagnose the real cause first, and only replace and program a key if the fob has truly failed.
