Secure the car right away
A stolen key is different from a lost one, because someone may be actively trying to use it. If you can, move the car to a secure, well-lit, or gated spot, and use a steering wheel lock for an extra visible barrier. If the thief also has your address from documents in the car, treat the situation seriously and consider parking elsewhere for now.
Report the theft to the police and get a report number. If your wallet, registration, or garage remote was taken along with the key, your home may be exposed too, so think about your house locks as well. Notify your insurance company so you are covered if anything happens.
Lock out the stolen key
The most important step is making the stolen key useless. A locksmith can reprogram your vehicle so it forgets the old key and only trusts new keys, which means the stolen one will no longer unlock or start the car. This is the electronic equivalent of changing the locks.
For older vehicles with a mechanical cylinder, rekeying the locks changes what the old blade fits, adding another layer of security. We will tell you which approach your year, make, and model needs, and often we can do both the reprogramming and any rekeying in one visit.
How a mobile locksmith helps
We come to wherever your car is, cut and program fresh keys, and erase the stolen key from the car's memory for most vehicles. On some newer or luxury models, all-keys-lost or full reprogramming can be dealer-level by design, and we will be honest with you about that before we start.
Bring a photo ID and proof of ownership so we confirm we are securing the car for its rightful owner. Acting quickly matters, since the sooner the old key is locked out, the smaller the window a thief has to use it.
